This incident happened when I was returning from Bhopal to Delhi after an interview. As I had booked my returning ticket in advance, all I had to do was wait for my train at the station.
I sat on a table near the platform. Just a few meters away from me was sitting a snack seller with his basket. On a table beside me was sitting an old couple who seemed lost in their world just like the rest of the people on the platform.
Just then, I saw a girl who seemed quite distressed. I felt like reaching out to her and asking if she was alright? But on second thought, I dropped this idea.
A few minutes passed, and suddenly I noticed that the girl who seemed distressed was crying now. I could not hold myself back and walked straight up to the girl.
But I was not alone who had spotted the girl crying. The snack seller who was sitting just a few meters away had also noticed her and had walked up to her along with me.
On reaching her, I tried to calm her down and asked, “Are you alright? Is there something I can do for you?”
She replied, “I lost my purse and phone. I was here for some work and I was supposed to return home today. But right now I have no ticket, no money to buy the ticket, and no phone to call my family to inform them about my well-being” and started crying again.
I took out my phone and gave it to the girl. While she was talking over the phone, I took out my wallet to check if I had sufficient money for the ticket. The snack seller was still standing there and looking at me. As feared, I had hardly any money. Disappointed, I put the wallet back in my pocket.
Next, I remember snack seller taking out the money for the ticket out of his pouch. He held out his hand with money in it and said, “Take this. Buy a ticket for her.”
I was surprised and said, “But you don’t need to do this. It is your hard-earned money.”
He replied, “Yes, it is. And I know its value. That’s why I know that she needs it more than me. I will be happy knowing that I could be of some help to her.”
I took the money half-heartedly and rushed to buy the ticket. When I returned with the ticket, I saw that the snack seller had given her something to eat and was still sitting beside her.
I handed her the ticket and told her that the snack seller has paid for her tickets. On hearing this, she started crying and thanked him again and again.
To this day, I can’t forget what he did for the girl. It was one of the most heartwarming incidents of selfless acts I had ever witnessed.
